Day 4 - after a good night sleep and well rest, we were all ready to explore the much talked about old quarters in Hanoi.
The Old Quarter, near Hoan Kiem lake, has the original street layout and architecture of old Hanoi. At the beginning of the 20th century the city consisted of only about 36 streets, most of which are now part of the old quarter. Each street then had merchants and households specialized in a particular trade, such as silk traders, jewellery, etc. The street names nowadays still reflect these specializations, although few of them remain exclusively in their original commerce. You can read more about the old quarters from
wikipedia
From the above map provided by Meracus Hotel (the hotel where we stayed for the past few nights), the walking trail of the old quarters are marked in maroon colour. But some of the streets were difficult to walk cause many of the pavements were blocked by goods displayed by the shop owners and most of the time we were forced to walk on the street where there's lots of motorbikes. But the street from Hang Dao to Dong Xuan is easier to walk cause the police were very strict on this stretch of road.
Shopowners cannot displayed their goods on the pavement and street hawkers were not allowed to peddle their goods along this street otherwise their goods would be consficated, even vehicles were not allowed to park along this stretch of street, we actually witnessed the police consficated the hawker goods and motorbikes too.
We started our walk from the puppet theatre, our hotel was located just behind this water puppet theatre and as we had already toured most of the streets in old quarters during the previous day city tour and also during the past few nights, we decided to just concentrate on the street leading to Dong Xuan Market.
The water puppet theatre(marked as number 31 on the above map) is just next to the north part of Hoan Kiem Lake.
Next to the water puppet theatre were many restaurants and cafe (marked number 8 on map).
Also along this stretch of road were many shops selling bags with brands like crumpler. Not sure if they are genuine but read in some other blogs that these bags were genuine but left over or did not pass the quality test in the factory.
For those who do not like walking, you can take the electric cars located just opposite the water puppet theatre where you can buy the tickets. You can read more information about the electric car from this guide.
The famous KFC Building where we used as a landmark to meet incase we got lost from each other.
Although there's a lot of bikes on the road, the bikers dont speed so you can cross slowly but dont run, the motorists would always give way to pedestrians. It is useless to just stand there to see an empty street before crossing, there's no way the street will be empty lol.
It's generally quite safe along this street as there's lot of policemen around here but still you have to take care of your personal belongings and bags.
Very interesting to see the local lifestyle in Hanoi, saw this hawker selling pork in her basket and peddling from shop to shop.
Oh I love this photo, actually stand there for a while to watch the old talented artist painting. He is really good.
Hawker selling vegetables. She was lucky there's no police personnel around otherwise they will consficate her goods.
Saw this beautiful temple but the beauty spoilt by the many untidy cables hanging around.
Hahaha only took the back view of the hawker selling live chickens in her basin, not wise to take front view of them, cause they would demand you to buy their goods or paid them a photo fee.
Witness the police consficating few motorbikes along this street, the owner actually run after the bikes to get them back but the police would not returned the bikes to them. I guess they had to pay a fine to reclaim their bikes back. The reason for consficating being that they parked illegally along the street which would add congestion to the already heavy traffic there.
