Spain, Portugal and Gibraltar Trip 2024 - Day 12 - Optional Trip to Sanctuary of Montserrat

Day 12 - We joined an optional tour to the Sanctuary of Montserrat. Centre of Pilgrimage, most famous within Catholic World, with the serrated mountain rising to the height of 1236 metres (4055 ft), a magnificent setting for Catalonia's holiest place. Surrounded by chapels and the spectacular Hermits Caves together with the most famous La Moreneta (black virgin) the ones and only, with the wooden orb protrudes fo pilgrims to touch.
It is only about an hour bus ride from our hotel to Montserrat. As it was still very early in the morning, it was so cold in the mountain.
It is so beautiful, we were above the clouds.

We could see the rising morning sun.

The clouds below us looked as if we were in heaven haha.

Very holy place.

There are few ways to come up to Montserrat, by train, cable car, cars, hike up or guided tour.

Interesting statue of a knight, the eyes seem to follow our movement.

Now we enter into the chapel.

Very peaceful inside the church.
View of people going up to touch the black virgin.

They attribute the change—from a lighter tone to black—either to prolonged exposure to candle smoke or a chemical reaction caused by a varnish used as a paint sealant. The statue was repainted black by successive generations of restorers.

We had some time to rest and have coffee and some shopping for sourvenirs before heading to our next destination.
